Aloha mai kākou, dear one. I am honoured to share a piece of Hawaiian wisdom that can help add clarity to daily rituals or help manage and soften your heart during challenging moments in life: the beautiful practice of Ho'oponopono.
For many, Ho'oponopono might sound like a formal ceremony. While it certainly can be, at its heart it's a profound yet simple practice of reconciliation, forgiveness, and love that we can weave into the very fabric of our everyday lives. It's about taking 100% responsibility for everything in our experience, and then, through a powerful mantra, clearing any discordant energies.
What is Ho'oponopono at its core? It is an ancient Hawaiian cultural practice that is Akua (God; the divine; higher power) centered. It's a way of cleaning or clearing and making space within ourselves. When something shows up in our lives that causes us discomfort, whether it's an argument, a challenge at work, a resentment old or new, or even just a nagging feeling, Ho'oponopono teaches us that it's a memory playing out within from within. By cleaning that memory, we clear our inner space, and in doing so, we clear our outer world.
How do you make it a daily practice? It's surprisingly simple. The core of the practice lies in repeating these four powerful phrases:
- I'm sorry.
- Please forgive me.
- Thank you.
- I love you.
You don't need to say them to anyone specific. You're saying them for yourself and to the memories that are causing the heaviness you are feeling.
Here’s how you can incorporate it into daily life:
- Morning Wake-Up: As soon as you open your eyes, before the day's tasks, silently repeat the phrases. It sets a tone of peace and readiness to clear anything that might arise.
- During Interactions: If you feel tension during a chat with someone or have a misunderstanding, you can quietly or mentally tell yourself the phrases above. It helps to detach and approach the situation with more compassion.
- Before Sleep: Review your day. Anything that felt off or bumpy, offer it up with the Ho'oponopono prayer. It makes space and creates opportunity for a more peaceful night. Let go and give yourself permission to start fresh.
- Anytime, Anywhere: The beauty is you can do it silently in your mind, or out loud. Just feeling the intention behind your words is enough.
Why does this simple practice hold power? It shifts blame to responsibility, from resistance to acceptance, and ultimately, from fear to love. When we take responsibility and own our stuff, we empower ourselves to create a more harmonious outer world. And although its not always easy, it is a simple but very powerful process of letting go, to then trust and make space for healing where it is needed.
So, I invite you, dear one, to try incorporating this gentle yet profound Hawaiian practice into your daily routine. You might be amazed at the lightness, peace, and clarity it can bring into your life.
Me ke aloha pumehana (with warm affection),
Namaste sweet ones & Malama pono (take care) always~
